Clary sage is an aromatic (nutmeg scent), felty hairy plant. It belongs to short-lived perennials, usually dying after producing seeds. New plants grow from scattered seeds in the next season. The plant forms rosettes of broad-oval, light-green, corrugated leaves up to 20 cm long. Growing inflorescence shoots in the shape of a panicle are widely branched, in the species they grow up to 100 cm high, in the variety "Vatican White" up to 75 cm. Szałwia muszkatołowa jest aromatyczną (zapach gałki muszkatołowej), filcowato owłosioną rośliną. Należy do bylin krótkowiecznych, przeważnie zamierających po wydaniu nasion. Z osypanych nasion w kolejnym sezonie wyrastają nowe rośliny. Roślina tworzy rozety szeroko-owalnych, jasno-zielonych, pokarbowanych liści długości do 20 cm. Wyrastające pędy kwiatostanowe w kształcie wiechy są szeroko rozgałęzione u gatunku dorastają do 100 cm wysokości, u odmiany "Vatican White" do 75 cm. Miododajne kwiaty koloru różowego (u odmiany białego) pojawiają się od czerwca do lipca.
