Ostnica cieniutka to delikatna trawa kępkowa wysokości 40 cm o nitkowatych, jasnozielonych liściach. Wczesnym latem wytwarza wąskie, wydłużone, czasami zwieszone wiechy o barwie kremowej lub beżowej. Kwiatostany reagują nawet na najsłabszy powiew wiatru. Roślina wnosi bardzo dużo ruchu do ogrodowej aranżacji. Roślinę powinno wysadzać się na stanowiskach słonecznych, ciepłych, osłoniętych od wiatru. Jest odporna na suszę. Nie ma specjalnych wymagań co do gleby.
